Encourage everyone’s participation
Give others the time and space to say what they need to say
Listen for understanding
Be open to and respectful of others’ opinions, perspectives, and worldviews
(This is not the same as being non-judgmental. Suspending judgment would be more accurate.)
Feel free to disagree and be sensitive to and accept others’ feelings and views
Make the class a safe place to take risks
- Do not make personal attacks; focus on issues rather than individuals
- Do not unduly interpret others’ opinions as personal attacks
Check if continued discussion on a point is useful / preferred over other options
Respect confidentiality; if in doubt, don’t repeat information without consent
